Welcome to
The ART IS Project
An Invitation to Express!
3 people are given 8 minutes each to do whatever they wish on a
4' X 8' surface!
What happens when you get 3 people to write a statement beginning with "Art is..", then provide them with paint and brushes and film each person in turn for 8 minutes?
The first piece ART IS #1took place in March at Plymouth State University, New Hampshire with 3 interactive art students. They agreed on the order of their performance and worked quickly and energetically.
A vibrant conversation erupted at the end: clearly, this had been an inspirational collaborative effort.
The filming for the first project was done with 4 cameras (mini-dv): one each side on tripods, one set above the painting filming down and one hand-held. The intention is for the film footage to be displayed on each end of the painting on large TV monitors.
Since the first project, a number of others have taken place with a variety of people. The interest has been huge – so many requests to be part of the next one!
I envision ART IS happening anywhere, in a city, in a village, anywhere in the world. It can be an intimate experience or presented in front of an audience.
The process is very inclusive with the added ‘safety’ of a time limit where the individuals can feel free to express themselves without the judgments that are inherent in typical ‘works of art’. In this way, people from all backgrounds can feel encouraged to engage with the medium of written and painted language.
3 layers of "language" or communication are combined in this piece:
the written language + the visual (painting) + the capturing (& re-experiencing) of the experience on film.
Please see VIDEO LINKS page to see the finished pieces to be displayed to the left & right of the artwork.

STOWE Vermont
ART IS Summer 2011
The new Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center is an added attraction for residents and visitors to Stowe. During the summer The Art Is Project set up on two separate occasions and a number of visitors, mainly children, contributed to the 3' X 5' panel.
Paints and brushes, scrapers (surprisingly popular), and a number of old art books to cut out, crayons, glue, hands and feet were used.
